Blog Feature Interview - Meet Irena from Gingers Garden on Artfire

Irena won the votes in a prior blog post. Please visit her Artfire shop and tell her I sent you.

Hi Linda,
My name is Irena and I am a Licensed Esthetician, Massage Therapist, Herbalist, Soapmaker and Bath & Body Formulator. I was born in Prague, which is in the Czech Republic. It was there that I learned to make soaps, balms and lotions from my mother and grandmother... how to make soaps, gather herbs, dry them and use them in infusions or soaps.

Yellow Soap

I came to the US as a teenager with no prior knowledge of the English language. It was hard, but immersed in the American culture, I learned fast.

My favorite color of the moment is teal green. I also like most greens, blue and purples.

The first thing I remember making by hand is a batch of soap. I made my first batch without any help in 1969. Before that, I always had my mother’s or grandmother’s help and supervision. I was so proud of myself!

Bath oil

Many things inspire me these days as I live in the desert. I love the cool feel of fresh jojoba; the bright flowers of many colors that bloom in the sunshine, the blue of the skies with no clouds in sight. I also get inspiration from my essential oils and blends I make from them. Some blends speak to me how they would like to be colored and made.

My favorite materials are natural oils and butters that I use for soaps and lotions, aromatherapy essential oils, different scents, herbs and different colors. I always have new ideas that I want to try. I love it when everything comes together and ends up exactly as I envisioned it. Handmade to me is made with care, in small batches, with proper knowledge and the best ingredients available. Some ingredients are expensive, but they are so worth it.

If you are thinking of getting into this field, learn all you can about it. Go to your local library and borrow some books to read. Search the internet and join an online group that has the same interests. Then experiment in small batches keeping safety in mind. Keep an open mind on what you read.

Some things you read on the net take with a grain of salt. This is NOT a type of a business that if you have a recipe and you make it today; you can sell it tomorrow. Follow FDA rules and guidelines. They are easily available on the net. One of the most valuable lessons that I learned is that products cannot be rushed. Do your homework. Study and learn more. Don’t work on a project if you are really tired, as there is a bigger chance that you will make a mistake. Keep good notes.

Lip Balm

When I’m not making soaps or bath & body products, I love to read old herbals, old perfume formulas or antique pharmacopeias. I also enjoy interacting with other Artisans online.  This is my business. This is what I do. I proudly make Handmade Artisan Soaps from scratch, Lotions made with organic or natural oils and butters, balms that help your skin, men’s shaving needs and some fun things like Bath Jelly for kids. All these products are made here in Palm Springs, California, USA. I am glad that I am following in my family’s footsteps by following their tradition.

Here are web site and links to my web sites and blog. I have a Christmas In July Sale at my ArtFire store right now. IrenaHandmade, Artisan Soaps,  Good for you Skin CarePalm Springs, CA

Sex in the City Weekend

I’m blessed with some terrific friends who know how to have fun, and this past weekend was proof.

It had similar events to Sex in the City, but we’re in Chicago, except for 2 friends who moved out of state. One (E) came in for the weekend.

On Sat:
• We saw the movie Bridesmaids and laughed our tushies off.

• We had lodge (drinking night) on Sat with 4 attendees (others moved out of state or were kicked out) – my choice was a mojito, that I made for the first time, under M’s supervision. Wine, food and jokes were flowing. I showed some necklaces to them, and 1 purchased 2 from my Etsy shop. (Yay!)
• We had a slumber party that included watching a few episodes of Weeds.

On Sun, we were moving a little slower. For me, this was the true Sex in the City day.
• We all sat next to each other and had pedicures (my first). I am no longer a pedicure virgin.
• We had brunch and went clothes and went shoe shopping followed by wine and snacks back at M’s. I tasted red chocolate wine, which tastes like Bailey’s.
• The other 2 women headed to a downtown hotel for work the next day and I hit the road to the suburbs.

Hope you all get to spend time with your girlfriends this summer. E will be back in Aug so I’m looking forward to more fun. M is only 45 min away and we have our next adventure planned for next weekend.

Google+ 6 Basics for Branding

One of my friends invited me to join new social media tool, Google+ G+) and I just edited my profile. Here are some tips I learned while reading an article by Dan Schawbel, a Personal Branding Expert

1. Fill out your profile. Profiles are an important part of any online presence so people can get to know you, your product, etc.

By JohnHaydon.com

2. Create your Circles based on who you want to message. G+ allows you to identify if your contacts are: Friends, Family, Acquaintances, and Following, a different method than Facebook and Twitter, where you might not really know many of your "friends." You control who sees what.

Dan recommends "importing your e-mail contacts from your Yahoo! or Hotmail account. You can even add your Facebook contacts. This way, you start with a foundation of friends. He recommends that you have a group for family, friends, industry contacts, your co-workers, and any special interest groups. Separate your professional contacts with your personal contacts so that when you publish content, the right people are receiving information you’re comfortable sharing, and it’s more relevant to them."

3. Use the Sparks feature for discussions about your expertise. Add your interests based on the types of content you typically keep track of using Google NewsGoogle Blog Search or Google Alerts. Then, when you click on each Spark, you will have the latest news that you can share with different Circles of your network and you won't have to leave the page. Think of Sparks as a real-time search engine built on your interests. If someone comments on your Spark, reply to keep the conversation going.

By pattistafford  com

4. Control who you associate with - through the Network Visibility section in the “Profile and Privacy” section under “Account settings,” you can manage which people appear on your profile or hide their pictures altogether.

5. Huddle and Hangout with your closest contacts - you can get more intimate with your contacts and forge better relationships with important people in your industry, clients, and friends. +Huddle is a group messaging experience that syncs people up with each other in individual Circles. You can use it for promotional purposes or to share insights and location-based information. Think of it as a real-time mailing list for your contacts. +Hangouts is a video conferencing experience, which you can speak to multiple people at one time. It’s good for team meetings if you’re an entrepreneur or remote client presentations if you do consulting.

From what I can tell, G+ shows your email address, so I'm not going to post my link here (even if I knew how). This is just an intro to this new service. I'm excited to try it out. If you want to be in each other's circles, convo me with your email address.

Blog Feature Interview - Made by A Hug

Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Annette Hug. I live in Lake Forest, California and have lived in Southern California my whole life. I’m married to a native Californian and we have an awesome 20 year old son that lives at home and is attending a junior college.

12 Personalized Thank You Labels

I love crafting and have become addicted to Etsy since opening my store 3 months ago! Shopping for various supplies is a favorite pastime for me, or should I say obsession.  If it’s looking for the right paper or embellishments to complete a project or searching flea markets for vintage items to use in on my mixed media projects. Rubber stamps are quickly becoming one of my favorite things to collect.

What is your favorite color combination? I love jewel colors and black, white and creams.

Rosette Black Scallop Gift Tags

What is the first thing you can remember making by hand? How and why did you make it? I can remember doing a large cross-stitch of a seahorse when I was about 10 years old. I love seahorses and had just found out that the males are the ones that have babies. I thought that was cool! I bought a pattern and all the floss from my babysitting money. My mom told me if I did a good job she would pay to have it framed. He came out really nice and I hang it up in my bathroom.

4 Thinking of YOU Organza Flower Gift Hang Tag

What inspires you? Lots of things… something I might see in a magazine or website. Purchasing new supplies from a scrapbooking store or craft show.

Where do your ideas come from? A lot of my ideas come from just being in my studio and pulling various supplies together. I’ll start to play with different colors of trim or yarn and pulling sheets of paper or a digital college sheet together. I have tons of crafting goodies around me and the ideas will start to form for my next project.

Wool Felted Pouch with Ribbon

What are your favorite materials? Paper, Trims, Yarn, Cricut Cartridges and Rubber Stamps!!!

Why should people buy handmade? Buying handmade is the ultimate compliment you can give to an artist. It’s saying your work is wonderful and I will pay you to own it.

Any tips of wisdom on selling handmade items? When selling handmade you have to really take pride in your work and have high quality workmanship.

What have been the most valuable lessons learned from other artists? Takes time to build up a customer base!

Apart from creating things, what do you do? I am a graduate of Cal State Fullerton with a Business degree and currently work part-time in a CPA firm preparing corporate and high-worth individual tax returns

What’s your favorite movie or book or both? Why? My favorite movie is Notting Hill. It has such a great story line and I love the line: “Feels surreal, but nice” One of best soundtracks!

What are the Web addresses for your work?
I’ve been doing holiday craft fairs in Orange County now for 6 years, but since I’m a newbie to selling on the web I only have an Etsy address at this time.
http://www.etsy.com/shop/MadebyAHug

Are you offering my readers any specials? Yes, of course! Anyone that mentions your blog in
my comments can use the coupon code “Blog” when checking out for 10% off your total purchase.

Please stop by Annette's shop and let her know I sent you.

Blog Feature Interview - Tracy's Bracelets & Soaps

I’ve been a little behind in posting Blog Feature Interviews, so here is Tracy from Tracy's Bracelets & Soaps

Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Tracy Fritze and I live southeast of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. I live in a rural township along the St. Croix River with no neighbors, just deer, turkey and various other wildlife! I am married (a few weeks away from 21 years!) and have two teenage boys that are 16 and 18. Besides my bracelet & soap making (and all my time on Etsy), I have 3 part-time jobs! My husband has his own business and deal with all the financial/money stuff, I work for the New York Times bestselling author MaryJanice Davidson as her personal assistant, and I work at my church as a Financial Secretary.

Flower Child Handmade Soap
soap
What is the first thing you can remember making by hand? How and why did you make it? As a kid I was addicted to coloring! My mom could always bribe me into doing things with the offer of a new box of crayons! I graduated up to colored pencils in my teens, coloring intricate geometrical patterns.

What is your favorite color combination? That is tough! I really love earth tones (tans/browns/reds) how they work together but love all colors.

Tea Tree Seaweed Soap
 soap

What inspires you? When it comes to making my homemade soaps, the seasons and weather really inspire me. I love to have soaps that match the season - I have already started fall soaps - things like patchouli and gingersnap.

Where do your ideas come from? A lot of my ideas come from the materials I have available to me. I purchase beads I like without a specific bracelet in mind. I like to spread out all my beads and wait for inspiration! With my soaps, I purchase scents to appeal to me and try to visual what that scent looks like and match that in my final product.

What are your favorite materials? With my bracelets, my favorite materials include natural stones and Swarovski crystals. With my soaps, I love using shea butter and cocoa butter!

Lampwork Glass Beaded Bracelet
glass

Why should people buy handmade? Any tips of wisdom on selling handmade items? Homemade products are made with love and passion - I am willing to pay a little more for that! With soap in particular, homemade soap doesn't have all those crazy ingredients that you can't pronounce in it like commercial soap! I love the way it makes my skin feel - I use my soaps to wash my hair too! I rarely need to lotion my entire body like I used to and don't need conditioner in my hair! I love the way my natural curly hair behaves when I use homemade soap in it.

MultiColor Turquoise Nugget Bracelet
multi

What have been the most valuable lessons learned from other artists?
That you have to be willing to try making items that don't necessary appeal to you - be willing and open to trying scents your customers request. I have done this and been very pleasantly surprised! I have also learned that you have to sell yourself. This is a very hard thing to me but I am learning that I have to put myself out there in order to sell my products.

Apart from creating things, what do you do? I am an avid reader and I love kayaking! We live on a beautiful river & have a couple kayaks. My husband and I try and go out at least once a week and quite often take bag lunches and go eat out on the river. It is wonderful!

What’s your favorite movie or book or both? Why? I read about 50 books a year so it is pretty hard for me to pick a favorite! One of my favorite authors is Jodi Picoult. Movies.....the older I get the more I like the kid movies! I love Pixar movies.

What are the Web addresses for your work?
