Etsy Twitter Team's Featured Shop - Tamara Garvey

This week's Etsy Twitter Team shop of the week is Tamara Garvey. She has terrific drawings and is a talented artist.

Look at this Birch Forest.

image Tamara Garvey

From her profile: "Tamara lives in Savannah, GA with my fiancée and our awesome dog. I like ink, animals, corduroy pants, Edward Gorey, lattes with skim milk, pen nibs, air-conditioning, and reading.

I draw almost always in pen and ink, because I love having ink-stained fingers! Also, ink is super-great. You can make it go anywhere from random to meticulous, and that is very useful. Sometimes I plan my drawings out with sketches and plans and schemes, but other times I just pour some ink all over the place and then add details, little characters, and text with my trusty nib pen.

This is another of my favorites, Bubble Tree

image bubble tree tamara garvey

She describes her drawings as "Darkly vague and whimsical narratives, sometimes incorporating text. I throw in pop culture references and hints of Edwardian England!"

Tamara went to Savannah College of Art and Design and got a degree in Illustration.

Beading Fun

I had to get away from the computer for a couple of days. It was pouring rain here most of the day, but it's clear now. The grass and bushes are looking green and lovely.

Been getting ready for my craft show on May 16. I've made some new items: car jewelry, pins, zipper pulls, key chains, pendant necklaces, bracelets and earrings that won't be seen until then. The show is in West Chicago, IL. If you live in the area, please stop by.

These are my green serpentine earrings, available for purchase here .

I won't be doing too many shows this summer. But, if you'd like to host a home show or an online show, I'd be happy to help you to earn discounts and earn some of my creations for free.

And, I love custom orders, so let me know what I can make for you, using colors you love or gemstone qualities you'd like to enhance in your life. I'm updating my Website also, and I hope it will be up sometime in May.

Today, I've been doing some housework. I washed floors and did laundry, and looking around, I feel accomplished. It's a good thing.

Today is Earth Day.

First, I dont' know if you've seen this image, but it's on Google today. I love it!

How can you help? Here are 4 ways to start going green:

1. Recycle - Most communities and some offices have recycling receptacles for paper, newspapers, plastic and glass bottles. Did you know you can also recycle some yogurt containers and the boxes from frozen lunches/dinners?

2. Use less paper and plastic utensils at home and at work. Bring a coffee mug, silverware and a few dishes to your office. Our company is offering prizes for signing up and participating in Earth Day. We also had a lunch and learn about recycling a few months ago.

3. is a Website where you offer your unused items to others for free. Visit the site and sign up for the community closest to you. You'll be able to post your unwanted items and give them a new home.

4. Keep canvas or other tote bags in your car to use for groceries and other purchases. Cut down on the plastic bags you get. Note that several grocery stores also have containers for your to recycle your plastic bags.

5. Do these for more than one day and find other ways to go green.

This is my Eartha Carnelian Bracelet .

Holocaust Remembrance Day

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. Last night I went to a service to remember and honor those 6 million Jews and other people who were killed in the Holocaust or Shoa. Each year we say "Never forget".

Unfortunately, there are people in the world who deny that the Holocaust happened, and some who are perpetuating the killing of people who are different. As human beings, we must stand up and not let it happen again.

I am wearing a black number on my right arm today, #J13505 in memory of Bracha bat Moshe, an 11-year-old twin girl who was killed in a concentration camp, along with 8 members of her family, including her grandfather, grandmother, mother, and siblings. Her youngest sister was 2 years old.

Please take a few minutes today to pray for those who were needlessly murdered and honor those who saved the survivors. Stand up and be heard so that this atrocity NEVER happens again. Teach your children about it too.

See here for more information.

Surprise Home Sale

Today, I felt the need to bead. I've considered the suggestions in the Etsy Forum thread when I asked people to compare 2 necklaces. So, I've been designing simpler designs with chains, gemstones and charms. Also, I put my magnetic business signs on my car with my shop name and tag line for some advertising.

I was photographing my new items in my driveway this afternoon and I saw my friend and neighbor's daughter, Jen, park in the driveway next door. We met halfway on the lawn and hugged each other. My friend is 90 and she's been living with her daughter in Michigan for the last 7 months. Just the other day I was thinking of her and about how much I miss her.

Jen and her friend, Di were interested in the sign on my car and wanted to see the jewelry that I had made. Di liked one pendant necklace. Since I had reworked it, I didn't have a price listed yet.

Then I found out that my friend was next door watching TV. I asked Jen if it was OK for me to price the necklace, bring other jewelry and visit for a bit.

So, I visited with my friend. We caught up with what's going on in the neighborhood and she said she misses the local news and weather people. It's so good to have her back for even a few days.

Jen and Di looked at my jewelry and Di kept picking up the same pendant I was photographing in the garage. And, she bought the necklace.

Yellow Jasper glass pendant

They were looking through my mixed box of newly completed designs and works in progress and, and holding things up to their ears and throats and asking each other what colors and designs looked best. It seemed to be fun for them and it was cerainly fun for me because I fawn over beads too. And, Jen ordered 2 pairs of earrings, a little different than a few pairs in my mini show. I've completed one and have 2 options for the other pair, based on what she asked for and what I think might look better.

I'll show you those earrings in a later post.

Here are two things I learned:

1. I need to find a system to have a more organized and visually appealing "traveling" display.

2. If an Etsy seller is kind enough to take a minute to critique your work, make the suggested changed and you'll get positive work.

Thank you, Jen, Di and Etsy people.

Friday Featured Etsy Seller - Envious Moon Designs

I met Jennifer in the Etsy Chat forums and she is today's featured Etsy seller.

My favorite item in her shop is this red wristlet bag.

image red bag

Jennifer says, "The best thing about creating my items on Etsy is being able to bring my art to other people. I have filled my house with my creations and I wanted others to be able to enjoy my stuff. I have done craft shows in the past but in my city there just isn't a regular venue for crafters. I really feel that Etsy gives me a wider customer base and the freedom to completely working at home. I don't have to cart my stuff around."

Linda: How long have your been creating your work?
Jennifer: I've always created art in a variety of different ways. I enjoy drawing, painting, knitting, sewing and just added cake decorating to the list. So at different time in my life I've been drawn to different mediums of artwork. Essentially I've been doing this since I was about 9 or 10 so for about 25 years.

Linda: Is Etsy full-time for you?
Jennifer: I'm a mother of two and a subsitute teacher so Etsy is not my full time job. I love the flexibility of Etsy and like it as my sideline...for now.

What are your favourite things in your shop?
My Furoshiki inspired handbags and my paintings.

Blue is Jennifer's favourite colour. Here is my blue Earth Day bracelet.

image blue earth day bracelet

Linda: What silly things do you do?
Jennifer: Silly things....well I love being goofy with my kids, singing and dancing in the livingroom, or running and jumping on the bed with the kids. We like to laugh in our house so we do lots of silly things.

Unique Pink Custom Earrings

One of my co-workers saw me laying out my jewelry at lunch one day. She saw the blue Swarovski chain earrings in my shop and and asked if I could make her a pair of pink earrings to match a necklace she has.

I'd like to show you the necklace and the earrings I've created the match. I was able to find pink cat's eye beads that match the necklace stone. Also, I used sterling silver daisy spacers and made them more in a cluster.

Here's the necklace

image pink cats eye necklace

And the earrings I designed

image pink cats eye earrings

Usually, I don't make the same thing twice, I like my clients to have unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry designs.

Check out my shop to see if there are any beads or designs that you like and we can work together on creating a custom jewelry design for you or your mom.

What's New?

This past week has been a little crazy with finishing last minute spring cleaning, grocery shopping and cooking for Passover. Although it's a lot of work to wash walls, and change dishes, Passover is one of my favorite holidays.

Here are a few facts about Passover:

Passover celebrates the freedom (redemption) of the Israelites from slavery under the Pharoah in Egypt. G-d spoke to Moses and showed the Pharoah the 10 plagues and after the last one, the slaying of the firstborn sons, Pharoah told Moses to "take your people and leave." In a hurry, the Israelites did not have time for the bread to rise.

Passover lasts for eight days for Jews in the Diaspora, not in Israel. If one lives in Israel, Passover lasts for eight days.

On the first two nights, there are Passover Seders which consist of retelling the story of our ancestors by ussing a Haggadah and eating ritual foods. Read more here.

During this holiday, we refrain from eating anything with leavening, or "puffy" foods. We do eat matzah, foods made with matzah meal (similar to bread crumbs) and it's the only time of year that John and I eat gefilte fish (I prefer sweet).

image passover matzah

I cook more during Passover (John usually cooks). I've made roast beef brisket, honey and lemon chicken, matzah stuffing, a few desserts (they're OK, but they're packaged and don't rise): chocolate brownies and cake. I might try making matzah pizza for the first time today.

On the second night of Passover, we begin counting the Omer, or the 50 days until the next holiday, Shavuot, the anniversary of receiving the Torah at Mt. Sinai.

So, that's what I've been up to and why you haven't seen me online lately. Send me your news, too.

Hello Text - 3 in 1 tool

I've been using this tool for awhile and wanted to share it with you. If you want to have your Tweets from Twitter also go to Facebook, Myspace and other social networking sites, you can use Hello Txt.

The login page looks like this:

image screen hello txt

Here are the other social networking sites that you can add your Tweets to:

image screenshot HelloTxt

And, this last screenshot shows that I've just added Ning and Blogger to my Hellotxt tool. I just have to find the codes to add them to the respective pages.

image screenshot HelloTxt

One drawback to Hello Text is that you can't see your tweets or anyone else's. But, you CAN enter more than 140 characters at a time.

I call it my 3-in-1 tool. Hope that you find this tool helpful. And, that you'll share any discoveries that you make, too.

Looking to save you time and money,
Linda B.

Sunday Etsy Seller - Morethanitseams

I apologize because I've been a little behind in my featured Etsy sellers blog posting.

This blog features Jeanette from Morethanitseams. I met Jeanette briefly in the forums, she sews, crochets and knits and takes custom orders.

This is Jeanette; I mainly run the shop. But my mom and my sister also help.

Linda: What is the best thing about creating your items on Etsy?

Jeanette: The best thing about creating my items on Etsy is the active feeJedback on my items that I get through contact with the buyers, and also on the forums. I really like knowing what people like and don't like about my shop and items. It gives me a chance to make them better!

My favorite item in her shop is Roy, a microwave mitt.

image monster microwave mitt

Linda: How long have you been doing what you're doing?

Jeanette: My shop just opened in December; but I have been knitting for about a year and a half, and crocheting for about 9 months. My mom (who makes all the lovely wallhangings!) has been sewing since she married, and my sister started knitting and crocheting at the same time I did. We are always trying new crafts, though.

Linda: Is Etsy your full time gig? Other venues?

Jeanette: I sell mostly on Etsy, but the Kountry Kupboard in downtown Osage, Iowa, stocks my knit/crochet dishcloths, and my crocheted scrubbies. If you are in Osage, feel free to stop by and check them out!

Linda: What is your favorite item in your shop?

My personal favorite item in my own shop are the heart-shaped scrubbies

image heart pot scrubbies

In your shop, Linda, I like the thank you tags

image thank you

Linda: What's your favorite color?

Jeanette: I do not have any one favorite color, but I like forest colors (browns and deep greens) and jewel tones.

Linda: What silly things do you do?

Jeanette: I play 'feechies' with my 10yo brother while making scrubbies. 'feechies' is a play-pretend game that we made up from the Wilderking Trilogy book series) I also am planning on trying to walk while crocheting. Recently it has been too cold outside to try it, though.

Thank you again for inviting me to be a part of your blog as an interview, Linda.

Show Jeanette at More Than It Seams Designs some Etsy love and visit her shop.

I still have some other shops to feature, and I'll be asking for new ones in a few weeks.

Going Green - Recycle

First, check out the green in my Etsy shop.

Green Briolette Earrings

Green Serpentine Bloodstone Earrings

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

When I was growing up a long time ago, the three “Rs” – Reading, “’Riting” and ‘Rithmatic” was the mantra. There was even a little song about it, but I don’t remember it.

While those are still important to children today, it’s also important to teach them the new “3 Rs” that several of us are now living by to help each other and the planet: “reduce, reuse and recycle”. Of course, crafters and artists have been doing this for years.

Acquiring goods to make one’s life simpler or to purchase items that one wants instead of what one needs is part of the American culture. I was taught to save up to buy special items, but have used credit cards to replace broken TVs and microwaves. Plastic (credit cards) are easy to use and the bill comes 30 days later, so it’s not like spending immediately money.

The consequences are being felt by everyone in these troubled economic times. So far this year, nine million Americans have lost their jobs. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Here are a few tips on how to reduce, reuse and recycle:

Use cash (not credit) for your purchases. Only spend what you have or save up each week to purchase a luxury item, etc. defined here as something you want (for example, an expensive handmade gemstone jewelry pendant and earrings set, a new DVD collection, etc.).

Go through your home, especially your closets and cabinets and get rid of clothing, household, and other items that you are not using. This reduces the amount of clutter in your home and you can donate the items to needy families creating a sense of good will. Also, you might be able to take a small tax deduction.

Find a different way to use an item or give it to someone else who can use it. For example, many of us reuse the plastic bags we get from grocery and department stores to bring our lunches to work.

Go one step further and gather up the grocery plastic bags and bring them to Jewel or another store that recycles them into other products.

I reuse the plastic inserts from cookie packages to store small bead containers and spools of wire. Also, I reuse greeting cards that I receive by cutting parts of them out and making new cards.

Thousands of artists and creative, talented individuals are repurposing items and selling them on This is saving our landfills and helping create additional income for artists and allowing others to purchase unique products from individuals. See some of the plastic beads I rescued and reused at my shop - Linda B.

Many of our communities and employers are already set up to recycle aluminum cans, plastic bottles and white paper products. Contribute to this effort by sorting your trash.

There’s a new effort to move away from purchasing the plastic water bottles that end up in landfills and using our own plastic water bottle. This means using water from our homes and/or workplaces and remembering to bring our own bottle. One of my water bottles has a strap and it is covered with a bright yellow and black Batman design.

Freecycle it: The Freecycle Network™ “is made up of 4,619 groups with 6 million members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns.”

How does it work? You’ll receive emails of what’s available from other freecyclers and be able to list and pick up items. To find out more and to sign up in your metro area, go to I was able to pick up boxes of plastic and pearl beads, which I am upcycling into holiday gifts.

There are towns, schools and other institutions that have electronic recycling days for old computers and monitors. Check your local newspaper for details. Batteries, cellphones and printer cartridges can be turned in to benefit a specific charity or to earn credits on purchases. Staples has a recycling program and PetSmart has special envelopes to recycle printer cartridges.

Part of my system involves putting unused items in the garage. If I don’t use the item for 9 months (that’s the ideal), I donate it to Goodwill or the veteran’s organizations who call me and pick up goods.

OK, I’ll admit to being a packrat and not getting rid of all items within the 9-month-time frame. In fact, this past weekend I went through boxes in the garage. I had intended to get rid of 3 boxes of items, but I took some things back and only have 1 box ready to go. There are some things that I am not ready to part with and that’s OK. But, they are still in the garage. That’s the rule that I set. Once it goes into the garage, unless I’m going to put the item into immediate use, it has to stay into the garage.
